Justice Building (the old Normal School)

The granite columns by the main doors were quarried between the Maguadavic River and Lake Utopia north and west of St. George. The granite is better known by its trade name, St. George Granite which is dark red.

The St. George Granite is also used in the columns of the parliamnet buildings in Ottawa and the post office columns in Saint John. The lighter variety was used to at the Natural History Museum in New York City.

The first granite quarry in the St. George area was opened in 1872 and as many as 16 quarries once produced stone for 5 nearby finishing plants.

Note the carved P.N.S. at the top of the building on either side of "New Brunswick." This stands for Provincial Normal School.
